Persephone (SM 2228) is a pre-agricultural, pre-Industrial, moderate population world with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in population size.

Persephone contains an Xboat Way Station. The planet has a standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere tainted by airborne micro-organisms and a chilly climate.

The system forms an important and heavily traveled link between Lunion and Glisten subsectors. The Scout way station uses 'Jayhon, the outer gas giant, as its main fuel source and supplies much of the fuel required for the port as well.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

A moderately populous and prosperous Imperial world located in the Lunion Subsector of the Spinward Marches
Persephone is ruled by an oligarchic Council of Merchants that has made itself hereditary. The main world’s starport is large and its associated markets often contain many rare commodities

Above information (edited for my game) from the Traveller Wiki.

The Vanday hard docks a the station and Hamilton and the rest of the crew is granted four hours leave on the station. This is the opportunity to buy personal items and what not.

Hamilton, your current funds are 7,600 cr. (5,700 cr  + 2 months at 1200 per month - hospital deductible 500)

You get the current "newspaper" article about new L-Hyd drop tanks to extend range of smaller ships.
Another article about an explosion at an L-Hyd drop tank production facility. No link to the terrorist group Ine Givar was found.

You do some shopping and find a bracelett that acts as a touch screen. https://vimeo.com/155677569
And you got the extended two year warranty for 25 cr total. Relatively easy to integrate into the ship's comm system.

Next stop is Marastan. For this trip, you’ll be part of a military convoy. The jump drive will be linked to a “wifi” system with the navy ships so you will all jump at the same time and, in theory, exit jump all at the same time. The chief will be overseeing this but he wants you with him so you can see what is going on.

The Chief says, “What you have to do is coordinate through the communications system. We will receive the data from the flagship. And when they transmit the jump signal, our ship will automatically jump with the rest of the fleet. We’ve only done it a couple of times with this ship. It’s a handy thing to know how to do. Switch main input to Slave. Nav Coordinates to come input. Now all you have left to do is make sure the ship is ready for jump as normal. They will do a jump countdown and there will be a second or two delay as there is some time dilation depending on how far away we are from the flagship. Cool thing, we are now tied to their “wifi” system. So we can access their entertainment and such until we jump. So, download now while you can. “

“OK so, checklist time. “

You hear the captain go through the list and at some point you hear the chief pipe in with the appropriate responses.”

“Fuel status, check. “

“Attitude thrusters check, power plant, check, batteries, check, Hydraulic systems, check, life support, check, pressure test, green, ship is sealed.”

“Release from dock.”

The ship leaves dock and proceeds to the jump point to meet up with the rest of the “fleet”

The chief explains, “This is an exercise as far as the navy is concerned. In times of war, this would be common practice.”

There are a number of ships participating. The flagship, coordinating everything is the Battleship George Hammond. Plus, two Gionetti class light cruisers, 4 Fer de lance class destroyer escorts, 4 Valor class Missile corvettes, 2 Gazelle class escorts, one fuel ship, 8 other merchant ships: Pasang, Warta Kota, Merah, Karya, Hotgame, Louis Geatane, Galanie, and Kedri.

As you head for the jump point, the captain calls for a meeting of all hands.

“Our little fleet has had a last minute addition. The IISS Cruiser Eagle Knight.  We’ve been contacted by them and by the George Hammond. They would like to conduct an exercise aboard our ship while in jump. Hey, there’s not much else to do. The scouts have an S3 team that will act as defenders, and the George Hammond has a team of marines that will act as a rescue team. The scenario is, pirates have taken the ship, the marines are to clear them out. Members of our crew will act as hostages or defenders. Naturally, we have stuff to do so I need all your input. But, this could be valuable training if anything should ever happen on this, or any other future ship you serve on. All Weapons will of course be non lethal. Stun harnesses if I recall. (did you ever see heartbreak ridge? they used a system called MILES gear that beeps when you get “shot” this will be something like that) Even you crew member will be wearing stun harnesses. What say you all?”

S3 Special Security Service. A sub branch of the Scout Security office. They specialize in infiltration and rescue of Imperial Interstellar Scout Service and other personal on potentially hostile environments. They pride themselves in not firing a shot while the marines just blow shit up.

So, what is your vote?

Prior to this, Anja Van Noort comes to see you. She says, “Hey there Hamster. I hear you are looking for pilot someday. Tell you what, come see me when you are off duty and I’ll run a simulator for you. We always need pilots. You are a pretty decent guy. I have my limited masters license and I take the unlimited mates license exam next month. So, that will make me a first officer. So, I will either stay here or be promoted to first mate and Mr. Creek will either transfer to another ship or, in as much as he is taking the unlimited masters exam, he will get his own ship and transfer off. Or we both will and people will move up and or new officers will come aboard. I think Mr. Evil is taking the
2nd officer’s exam. Either way, on the smaller ships, you have to know how to do just about everything. Even the chief engineer is a bridge watch stander. I know Chief Cruz knows how to pilot. And he can stand a bridge watch. But, I don’t think he is rated for a ship this big and has to call someone to the bridge to take over if there is actual maneuvering involved. I know he can pilot a smaller ship and he has a limited pilot’s license. But I think he only has a limited mates license. So, are you interested? “

“Aye! Let DO this!”

“Yes Thank you! That would Really help!”

The crew seems pretty good about the exercise. Oh, did I mention a 500credit bonus for it?

So, the scouts arrive first and set up. Four of them are in engineering with you. They set you up with a stun suit. Though yours, will just record you as a casualty and won’t interfere with your duties. The ones the participants wear, will stun them (like the training exercise in Starship Troopers) The scouts are rather friendly and rather chatty.  They are in some sort of military vacsuit. Most vid shows portray them as undisciplined. The stereotype is blue jeans and a windbreaker with a scout insignia safety pinned on. There is no doubt these guys know what they are doing.

When you come off duty you run into the marines getting their stuff together. They have no sense of humor…
Most of them are in battledress. Which makes you wonder how they are going to get through certain areas of the ship…

Hamilton with the Scout troops.

The big difference, the marines are ship based assault troops. They take an objective and move on. Emphasis on teamwork. That is not to say that they can't be stealthy when need be. They are excellent infiltrators. But their mission is seek and destroy.

The scouts, they do EVERYTHING. One of the guys you talk to says he spent a year as an express boat pilot. “A whole lot of reading. I learned to be an accountant while I was in space. As well as basket weaving. Gotta do something in jump. Know what I mean?”

They can work in teams but have the ability to work alone behind the lines. The 3S prides itself on not having to fire a shot and still get stuff done.

Meanwhile, after the jump, the scouts get to work. They go to the air ducts and put things in them. They all seem nonchalant about things.

“So, Hamilton is it? You’re relatively new to the spaceship business eh? What do you think?”

“Hey boss, the jar heads haven’t moved yet. They are still getting themselves together.”

“Don’t lose any of the bugs. We’ll need them all back later.”

“I like it. I want to pilot so maybe I can have my own ship one day. It’s all very Exciting!”

“Well that is a pretty cool thing indeed! It’s actually a mix of excitement and extreme boredom. Josh there, was an XBoat pilot. Not a whole lot to do but you have time to learn things. Dude, don’t you take the CPA exam soon?”

“Yes, next month.”

“Oh, it looks like the jar heads are ready to play. Finally.”

long story short. The Scouts win. Two hold the engineering section while the others go out to meet them. The marines are eliminated but the scouts suffer one “casualty”

The next day, its the marines turn to hold the ship while the scouts act as pirates.

In contrast, the marines are much more serious. It ends in a bit of a draw. Technically, the marines held off the “pirates” but took way more casualties. In your position as, you have actual work to do. At one point, your computer gives  you a message, “ Hi, If this were real, everything would go offline. But, since this is just an exercise, just tell the jar heads a simulated computer meltdown has occurred. hahahhaha!”

One terminal shows what the simulation is. The other terminal is working normally. (can’t endanger the normal functions of the ship, eh?)

When you mention it to them. One of them says,”Drakh! We need to take the computer core too now. “

The computer core access room is on level six aft of the bridge.  Hamilton knows where it is but has never been there. No real need.

The Marines get ambushed when they try to take the computer room. They succed but only end up with one survivor. There is also a lot of simulated damage to the ship.

The rest of the trip is uneventful.

Although Hamilton is an engineer, he is occasionally called upon to help with cargo loading and unloading. There are two cargo teams. One team is inside the ship, the other is outside. Prior to exiting jump space, all cargo containers to be unloaded are marked as such. Once in orbit, the ship's robots with the inside team disconnected the cargo container connections. The humans come by and double check and help guide the container out. Occasionally, a couple of crew members with a  really big wrench are needed. And that's where Hamilton comes in.

The outside teams guide the containers to the lighters or cutters to be taken away. The same cutters bring in the new containers so they are "parked" nearby. Someone keeps an eye on them so they don't float away or anything.

Once the containers are off loaded, the new containers are loaded and the process happens in reverse. They are loaded with small craft with grabber claws. (think of the pods from 2001) as well as cranes on the ship and such. it's like a swarm of locusts with all the pods and very very dangerous. BTW, the command crew wear blue uniforms the engineering crew wear orange or lime green. Same with the cargo crew though they tend to wear more orange. The idea is to be visible.

Oh, while in transit, Hamilton gets to talking to Lucius (Luscious) Worosun. He is a cargo handler and fireman on the same shift.  He also has some security duties at times. He has a Hazmat certificate and is a qualified cutter pilot. Turns out, he is a former imperial marine. He was a “beach master”. They supervise the unloading of troop ships and cargo in an invasion. (goes back to the allies invasion of normandy) Big guy, friendly. Mustered out early with a standard discharge. Got into a fight and beat the crap out of a couple of trouble makers. He wasn’t charged, but his CO was keen on getting rid of him. So he left the marines and got picked up by the company.

In addition to cargo, a fuel ship comes out to refuel. Occasionally, if the ship docks at a space station, then a hard connection is made for refueling. While the ship is capable of "frontier refueling" that is skimming a gas giant for fuel. The process takes time. And time is money. It is more economical to purchase fuel then skim it for "free" .

In this trip, Hamilton is giving the fuel monitoring duty. It's mostly just watching the valve pressure and how much fuel is being loaded. The guy outside has his gauge and his reading should match yours. And a fuel spill drill. Which will require a hazmat or vaccsuit

After 72 hours in system, time to go. And JUMP!!

Lunion

Arrived Lunion system 216-1105 Imperial   August 4, 5628 Earth date.

Lunion is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

Lunion serves as the crossroads of commerce and information to Glisten (Spinward Marches 2036) and beyond.
  • As a major trade hub several Megacorporations and numerous smaller companies have offices located in the starport.

[edit]History & Background (Dossier)

Lunion is a high population, high technology, industrialized planet with a garden world environment.
<jumpmap>

From the traveller wiki. edited for my traveller universe. MTU.

The ship has been in system for almost 24 hours. Hamilton is doing routine maintenance before leaving the system. Really, as a jump drive engineer, there isn't much to do in normal space. Other than routine maintenance on the jump drive, (you can’t do some things while you are using it obviously) Hamilton is assigned to monitor the refueling and help out in whatever areas are required. Help the rest of the engineering team do their stuff.

“Mr Leeds to deck 7 please. Mr. Leeds to deck 7.”

When he gets there, Leoso is there to meet him at the elevator. He just kind of shrugs and says, “Captain wants to see  you in the lounge.”
The Captain is there with officer Gordon Strong. Upon entering the captain says, “Please close the door.”

“I figure we should talk to you about this before we talk to the rest of the crew.  As you know, we received word Mr. Frump never reported into his new ship. In fact, he never showed up to give his testimony. He has basically just vanished without a trace. Consequently, there is a sector wide bulletin out for him but who knows what’s happened to him. He could have run off, as he may know more than he claims. Or, someone doesn’t want him to testify. In either case, the investigation is at a standstill.  Officer Strong will remain on board till our next jump. After that, we will have a dedicated security person on board. Which kind of puts a damper because I really need another engineer and cargo handler.”

Officer Strong asks, “The mystery man at the restaurant. You say he left right away. Did he say anything else to you? Did you see where he went after the shots were fired? “

“no.”

“Just one more question. When we were docked at Lanth and you left the ship, who was at the gangway? Why didn’t they stop you or question you about leaving the ship?”

“now that I think about it No one was there. No customs official either. There Should have been right?”

The Captain says, “Quite right.” He touches his comm link and says,”Mr. Glick, can you send me the duty rouster for Lanth?”

“We may need to do a complete sweep of the ship just to make sure we don’t have anyone extra on board. Though considering its been over two weeks and one stop. They could have already disembarked. “

“Oh, you don’t remember what time you got the phone call and then left, do you? If not, I think we can check the communications log and get an approximate time.”

After a bit, it comes back that Atoso Bahati was supposed to be on the gangway at that time. He is deck hand-security from third shift so its most likely Hamilton would almost never see him. In fact, Hamilton has probably said less than 100 words to him the whole time he's been on board.

The Captain ponders a bit and says, "Well, go and return to your duty. We'll call you if something comes up."

An hour later, you get called up to the lounge again. Normally, they would do these sorts of thing in the captain’s office. But, he is observing the loading and unloading. When you come in the captain says,” Atoso Bahati says he never left the gangplank. Except for one minute when the customs officer called him over. There was some sort of transient creating a disturbance and they went to deal with it. So, that was probably when you left the ship. I have no idea why the customs officer would call one of the crew over instead of calling for assistance.”

“He didn’t have any details as to the transient’s appearance. He didn't remember anything. After doing this for a while, it's hard to remember all the people you meet in different ports. Some, yes, you do run in to again and again if you do it long enough. Otherwise, no.”

Officer Gordon says,”Seems to me it was a diversion so that Mr. Frug could get off the ship. It was his phone that was called. Plus, no one here would have known he was off the ship. Someone thought he was still on board. In as much as Mr. Frug never appeared at his deposition or to his next assignment, I think we should focus more on him.”  He turns to the captain, “Sir, I do believe there is nothing more I can find out on board here. I think I should get off at the next stop and return to Lanth and continue the investigation there.”

The Captain says, “ Well, the diversion did work, in as much as Hamilton was the one who managed to get off the ship. Seems to me though, Mr. Frugg expected to be able to slip back on. So he had intended it to be a quick errand. Hamilton, when you went to the MOJ office and they were no help. How long did you waste there before going on and checking the place yourself?”

“I think it was just an hour. They couldn’t help at all.”

Officer Gordon says, “Yeah, they are working on some sort of case there. I don’t know the particulars. Plus, that station is undermanned. Anyway, I’ll be in touch if something else develops but this is where I get off. Got to find a ride back to my post.”

Cargo gets unloaded and loaded. Officer Gordon leaves and managed to hitch a ride on an express boat.  The Vanday proceeds to the jump point and leaves the system.

During the jump there is an announcement. “All hands, all hands, this is an anti-piracy drill. Proceed to your station immediately!! This is a drill.”

Hamilton's assigned station is the engineering room. He is to seal the hatch along with anyone else in with him. Swing down the isolation door. Its like a garage door. But it has firing ports in it so you can fire a weapon through it. Alfredo and Anna are on duty during the drill. They just kind of go about their business while Hamilton acts as the defense. The chief has gone to the bridge. The rest of the engineering staff has met outside and formed a damage control team.

Defending Against Boarding

Put on a vacc suit. Preferably a hard suit or work suit as they have some armor. Most doors will automatically seal which will slow down boarders, as they have to attack each door to open it. This allows the useful strategy of venting the rooms that the boarders are in, so they suffer asphyxiation damage while trying to attack your ship. Obviously, if they are in vacc suits too, the advantage will be minimal.  Boarders will attempt to flee a room that has run out of oxygen (a room with hazard stripes), so this also helps protect the system they were attacking. It can be useful to vent empty rooms in your ship ahead of time, so that enemy boarders will begin to suffocate immediately (this also helps put out fires). Note that each time the boarders force doors open they cause air to leak out of the room they're entering.
It is important to remember that the life support system in FTL is not a complete representation of the laws of conservation of mass. For example, a depressurized room that isn't exposed to space will drain pressure from any adjacent rooms with access, without experiencing increasing its own air pressure, whereas theoretically the air should normalize between the two enclosed rooms:
I.e. Room 'X' has 0% air pressure, but it is not exposed to space. Room 'Y' has 100% air pressure. Theoretically, opening the door between room X and room Y would cause both rooms to regulate to 50% air pressure. Instead, room 'X' will simply drain both rooms to 0% air pressure. If one room is depressurized aboard the ship, closing all external airlocks and opening all internal airlocks will simply cause the entire ship to lose overall pressure from the single depressurized room, rather than providing a quick way to quickly restore survivable air pressure to one or two depressurized rooms as an improvised alternative to the life support system.
Intersections will seal so that will add to the fun. Hold all essential rooms. Engineering and bridge. Medical bay is usually the most fortified room.
Engineering-after the hatch is sealed, swing down the blast door and open the firing ports. If a boarder somehow manages to get through the door, you can open fire without them being able to shoot back at you. Everyone shows they are ready. The first mate comes by and checks everyone.

Eventually you hear, "All hands, stand down from security stations."

D'ganzio

In transit, Hamilton ponders what has happened. "I go back over everything I know.
I still don’t have any idea Who killed who and why and what it all has to do with the people in cryosleep!
they want to discredit the Imperium? And the Imperium’s forces? To start another war? Can I access ship personel files from my station? Would it be a bad idea to do so? Probably. In as much as I'd need the Pursers's log in and password."

He is so busy ponder he doesn't notice the timer alert.

PING!!

“Bridge to engineering. YO! Hamster! you get a jump exit proximity alert?”

“yeah. Said exiting jump in 1.5 hours but that was…”

“…that was 30 minutes ago. Didn't you?” Ooops

“I just noticed it. Was wondering why you didn’t call me.”

“All hands, exit from jump in one hour thirty minutes.”

The Ship's AI can handle many of these tasks. And indeed it does. But, the interactive voice system is REAAAAALLLY annoying. So that system is not turned on.

Oh Great. OK. So…I’ll be here ….in engineering….doing engineering…stuff…”

“Um, yeah, roger that.”

In spite of all that, actual jump exit is over two hours later. It's an approximate time. Usually within 30 minutes but on occasion, delays of hours or even a day are fairly common.

Arrived in D’ganzio system  201-1105 Imperial  July 21, 5628 Earth year.

“Mr. Leeds to the bridge at your convenience please. Mr Leeds to the bridge at your convenience.”

RING RING. You hear Leso's voice say, “Hamster. Get your ass to the bridge asap. Unless you’re doing something work related.”

He gets to the bridge and notices the window. He can  see a number of ships in the distance. Several navy ships including a battleship. Remember there is a navy base in this system.

Anyway, the captain says,”You’ll be happy to know our guests have departed. We still have the animals in stasis and will keep security measures in place. You’ll be briefed on all this later.

About then Officer Gordon Strong comes onto the bridge. He asks to speak to the captain and motions for you to come along as well.

Hamilton steps off to the side with him, the captain, and the first mate. Gordon says,” Well, I have good news and not so good news. I’ve received a report from the police on Roup-Regina. There is a missing longshoreman name Reeves Upton. He was part of the team that serviced the ship there. However, his DNA doesn’t match the dead body found in your fuel tank. But there is a possibility it is related.”

“Related? how?”

“That’s what we are looking into. It could be a big coincidence. But I have my suspicions. “

Meanwhile, cargo is off loaded and on loaded. Turn around is 72 hours more or less. The ship heads off towards the jump point and jumps.

About an hour after jump, “All hands all hands, in accordance with imperial regulations, this is a drill, I repeat, this is a drill.  All passengers and crew, this is a decompression emergency! Don vac suits and rescue bubbles, I repeat, this is a decompression emergency, don vac suits and rescue bubbles!”

Hamiliton, has a bubble on at all times.A crew bubble is slightly different than a passengers. Its a big giant baggie with arms and legs instead of a round bubble. If a vacc suit isn't handy, then you are supposed to get into a rescue glove.

Hamilton manages to get his rescue pack on with no trouble and within the 30 second time.

WHOOT!
"I'll go help anyone that needs it"

"Nope. Stay where you are. In your cabin."  The intercom buzzes. When the rescue pack is sealed it transmits a code, in a real emergency, its so you can be found and rescued. In this instance, it verifies that  Hamilton got his on in the allotted time. Anyway, the intercom buzzes, “Mr Leeds, you may stand down and remove  your pack. Good job! Can you go check on engineering?”

“yes sir.”

When he gets there, Anna Dalaks is on duty. She’s had a suit malfunction. She pissed…

He goes to help her and try to stay calm and cool and collected

Gasket on her suit broke. It’s going to need repair. So, she is officially “dead” this drill.

“Sorry. You dead."

"ok, so?what else can I do now?

She’ll have to repeat the test later. She says, “Well shit. Tell the bridge I’m “dead” and press the drill reset. It’s coded to your thumbprint so there is no cheating on a drill. The system already knows you passed and that now you are a monitor."

“ok”
Buzz the bridge and tell them Anna Dalaks is ‘dead’ and reseting the drill.

He discovers everyone is kind of annoyed about her suit malfunction and that she “died” in the drill. On the plus side, Hamilton was able to get there and take control of engineering. Mostly, she failed to qualify and has to drill, and re-drill, again and again. And someone has to monitor it. And it affects the company’s insurance.

In any case, Hamilton has just come off watch and is getting either food or sleep when he hears, “All hands, all hands, exit from jump in approximately two hours. Cargo teams on standby. “

ok
get some grub then sleep

Arrive D'ganzio 205 Imperial July 24 5628 Earth Date.

Turn around is quick. Only in system for 3 days.
