The ship has been in system for almost 24 hours. Hamilton is doing routine maintenance before leaving the system. Really, as a jump drive engineer, there isn't much to do in normal space. Other than routine maintenance on the jump drive, (you can’t do some things while you are using it obviously) Hamilton is assigned to monitor the refueling and help out in whatever areas are required. Help the rest of the engineering team do their stuff.
“Mr Leeds to deck 7 please. Mr. Leeds to deck 7.”
When he gets there, Leoso is there to meet him at the elevator. He just kind of shrugs and says, “Captain wants to see you in the lounge.”
The Captain is there with officer Gordon Strong. Upon entering the captain says, “Please close the door.”
“I figure we should talk to you about this before we talk to the rest of the crew. As you know, we received word Mr. Frump never reported into his new ship. In fact, he never showed up to give his testimony. He has basically just vanished without a trace. Consequently, there is a sector wide bulletin out for him but who knows what’s happened to him. He could have run off, as he may know more than he claims. Or, someone doesn’t want him to testify. In either case, the investigation is at a standstill. Officer Strong will remain on board till our next jump. After that, we will have a dedicated security person on board. Which kind of puts a damper because I really need another engineer and cargo handler.”
Officer Strong asks, “The mystery man at the restaurant. You say he left right away. Did he say anything else to you? Did you see where he went after the shots were fired? “
“no.”
“Just one more question. When we were docked at Lanth and you left the ship, who was at the gangway? Why didn’t they stop you or question you about leaving the ship?”
“now that I think about it No one was there. No customs official either. There Should have been right?”
The Captain says, “Quite right.” He touches his comm link and says,”Mr. Glick, can you send me the duty rouster for Lanth?”
“We may need to do a complete sweep of the ship just to make sure we don’t have anyone extra on board. Though considering its been over two weeks and one stop. They could have already disembarked. “
“Oh, you don’t remember what time you got the phone call and then left, do you? If not, I think we can check the communications log and get an approximate time.”
After a bit, it comes back that Atoso Bahati was supposed to be on the gangway at that time. He is deck hand-security from third shift so its most likely Hamilton would almost never see him. In fact, Hamilton has probably said less than 100 words to him the whole time he's been on board.
The Captain ponders a bit and says, "Well, go and return to your duty. We'll call you if something comes up."
An hour later, you get called up to the lounge again. Normally, they would do these sorts of thing in the captain’s office. But, he is observing the loading and unloading. When you come in the captain says,” Atoso Bahati says he never left the gangplank. Except for one minute when the customs officer called him over. There was some sort of transient creating a disturbance and they went to deal with it. So, that was probably when you left the ship. I have no idea why the customs officer would call one of the crew over instead of calling for assistance.”
“He didn’t have any details as to the transient’s appearance. He didn't remember anything. After doing this for a while, it's hard to remember all the people you meet in different ports. Some, yes, you do run in to again and again if you do it long enough. Otherwise, no.”
Officer Gordon says,”Seems to me it was a diversion so that Mr. Frug could get off the ship. It was his phone that was called. Plus, no one here would have known he was off the ship. Someone thought he was still on board. In as much as Mr. Frug never appeared at his deposition or to his next assignment, I think we should focus more on him.” He turns to the captain, “Sir, I do believe there is nothing more I can find out on board here. I think I should get off at the next stop and return to Lanth and continue the investigation there.”
The Captain says, “ Well, the diversion did work, in as much as Hamilton was the one who managed to get off the ship. Seems to me though, Mr. Frugg expected to be able to slip back on. So he had intended it to be a quick errand. Hamilton, when you went to the MOJ office and they were no help. How long did you waste there before going on and checking the place yourself?”
“I think it was just an hour. They couldn’t help at all.”
Officer Gordon says, “Yeah, they are working on some sort of case there. I don’t know the particulars. Plus, that station is undermanned. Anyway, I’ll be in touch if something else develops but this is where I get off. Got to find a ride back to my post.”
Cargo gets unloaded and loaded. Officer Gordon leaves and managed to hitch a ride on an express boat. The Vanday proceeds to the jump point and leaves the system.
During the jump there is an announcement. “All hands, all hands, this is an anti-piracy drill. Proceed to your station immediately!! This is a drill.”
Hamilton's assigned station is the engineering room. He is to seal the hatch along with anyone else in with him. Swing down the isolation door. Its like a garage door. But it has firing ports in it so you can fire a weapon through it. Alfredo and Anna are on duty during the drill. They just kind of go about their business while Hamilton acts as the defense. The chief has gone to the bridge. The rest of the engineering staff has met outside and formed a damage control team.
Defending Against Boarding
Put on a vacc suit. Preferably a hard suit or work suit as they have some armor. Most doors will automatically seal which will slow down boarders, as they have to attack each door to open it. This allows the useful strategy of venting the rooms that the boarders are in, so they suffer asphyxiation damage while trying to attack your ship. Obviously, if they are in vacc suits too, the advantage will be minimal. Boarders will attempt to flee a room that has run out of oxygen (a room with hazard stripes), so this also helps protect the system they were attacking. It can be useful to vent empty rooms in your ship ahead of time, so that enemy boarders will begin to suffocate immediately (this also helps put out fires). Note that each time the boarders force doors open they cause air to leak out of the room they're entering.
It is important to remember that the life support system in FTL is not a complete representation of the laws of conservation of mass. For example, a depressurized room that isn't exposed to space will drain pressure from any adjacent rooms with access, without experiencing increasing its own air pressure, whereas theoretically the air should normalize between the two enclosed rooms:
I.e. Room 'X' has 0% air pressure, but it is not exposed to space. Room 'Y' has 100% air pressure. Theoretically, opening the door between room X and room Y would cause both rooms to regulate to 50% air pressure. Instead, room 'X' will simply drain both rooms to 0% air pressure. If one room is depressurized aboard the ship, closing all external airlocks and opening all internal airlocks will simply cause the entire ship to lose overall pressure from the single depressurized room, rather than providing a quick way to quickly restore survivable air pressure to one or two depressurized rooms as an improvised alternative to the life support system.
Intersections will seal so that will add to the fun. Hold all essential rooms. Engineering and bridge. Medical bay is usually the most fortified room.
Engineering-after the hatch is sealed, swing down the blast door and open the firing ports. If a boarder somehow manages to get through the door, you can open fire without them being able to shoot back at you. Everyone shows they are ready. The first mate comes by and checks everyone.
Eventually you hear, "All hands, stand down from security stations."
