Equus

Arrive Equus (Lanth)     028-1106 Imperial  January 28, 5629 Earth date

Equus is a moderate population water world with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in population size.
Equus is located on a major trade route to the Rhylanor Subsector. Equus' land mass is almost all swamp or steep mountains rising straight from the oceans.

Unlike the last two systems, this one is extremely busy. It is somewhat of a crossroads for cargo.

This was a blur of activity. It seems Hamilton will be on duty when the ship makes it’s jump. As he comes on duty the chief engineer is there. He has a brief meeting with all of you that are on this shift. “As you are probably aware, the captain will be leaving us at our next stop and will probably rejoin us at Regina. I say probably because I have heard through the grapevine, he may be promoted which would give him a desk job at his home on Rhylanor. So, this may or may not be his last voyage. He’d still be getting out into space, but not on long voyages like this.

Meanwhile, Captain Andrew Tuluthka is due to take over for him for the next few months. I don’t know if Captain Benke will be back with us at Regina until the time comes. Additionally, Atoso Bahati and Branwen Falls will be rotated out. Thomas Halfacre and Trina Strom will be coming aboard. Thomas will replace Atoso as a deck hand and Trina will take over as third shift pilot for Branwen. At least, that is the plan as it stands. Any questions?”

System traffic is rather heavy. So much so that, two of the cargo lighters collide. One was outbound to the ship. The other was coming from another ship. Consequently, there is a delay as the debris is collected and an investigation commences. The authorities will interview anyone who was on the bridge at the time or who may have seen it happen while on EVA. This will add roughly 24 hours to departure time. The captain advises you, "Once we are cleared for departure, I'll want full speed to the jump point. Whomever is on duty when we get there, I'll want an immediate jump. So you'll have the jump count down already ticking once we leave. Mr. Leeds, this is somewhat common in areas of pirate activity. So it will be a first for you and practice for the rest of the crew.".

Usually, the ship will come to a stop, do the final check list, then jump. This time, it will all be on the fly.

“All hands, the last carrier is away.”

“Thank you Mr. Glick. This is the Captain. Cargo team, commence your final check. Helm, make your course to our next jump point. Engineering, full speed on course to jump point. Commence jump countdown.”

The Chief engineer says, “This will be interesting. Our next stop is Rhylanor. We will be entering jump at full speed. Due to conservation of momentum, when we exit jump, that is how fast we will be going. So, the navigator really has their job cut out for them. In terms of plotting our exit point. The helmsman too. He better be sharp as we will be moving on exit.”

A lot is happening at once. In a relatively short time, “Mr. Leeds, JUMP!!”

The trip through jump space is relatively uneventful.

“Hey, Hamster, wake up. Captain wants everyone up just in case. Due to exit jump in the next couple of hours.”

"I'mup....imup...."

“Clock is ticking. All hands to your stations. Exit in approximately two hours.”

Hamilton is just walking into engineering when, WHOOOOMP!! And he goes flying…

When he comes to he asks,"What happened?"

Ship came out of jump. Remember our velocity when we went in? Well the force of inertia was a bit much for the ship's compensators. It took a second or so for them to fully kick in; So, you went flying! Got a nice bump I see. Doc says you are OK. Did a scan on you and no concussion.

Other than the bump on his head, Hamilton and the ship are both fine.
